Everything you need to know about the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation

UK Electronic Travel Authorisation application

What is the UK ETA?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital pre-travel permission introduced from January 2024. It is mandatory for eligible nationals who previously could travel to the United Kingdom without any advance authorisation. The ETA is not a visa — it is a lighter, digital pre-screening system linked directly to your passport, designed to strengthen border security before travellers arrive.

Once granted, the ETA permits multiple short-stay visits to the UK for tourism, family visits, business meetings, or transit purposes. There is no physical document issued — everything is stored electronically and checked automatically when you check in for your flight and arrive at the UK border.

Who Needs a UK ETA?

The ETA applies to nationals of visa-exempt countries who previously did not need advance permission to enter the UK

EEA / EU Citizens (non-Irish)

European Economic Area and EU citizens — excluding Irish nationals who remain covered by the Common Travel Area — now require an ETA before visiting the UK for tourism, business, or transit. This change affects nationals of all EU member states.

Americans & Canadians

Citizens of the United States and Canada are required to obtain an ETA before travelling to the UK for short-stay visits. Despite the historically close relationship between these nations and Britain, the ETA is now a mandatory pre-travel requirement for all holders of US and Canadian passports.

Australians & New Zealanders

Australian and New Zealand passport holders, who previously enjoyed visa-free access to the UK, must now apply for an ETA before departure. The process is straightforward and fully digital — it can be completed via the official UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website.

Gulf States Nationals

Nationals from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states — including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar — may need an ETA depending on their individual nationality and travel history. Always verify current eligibility before booking travel using the official GOV.UK guidance.

Japanese & South Korean Nationals

Citizens of Japan and South Korea are now required to obtain an ETA before visiting the United Kingdom. The application can be submitted quickly through the official UK ETA app (available on iOS and Android) or directly via the GOV.UK website.

Other Visa-Exempt Nationals

Many other previously visa-exempt nationalities now require an ETA, including nationals from Chile, Hong Kong (BN(O) holders), Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, and others. Always confirm your specific eligibility using the official UK ETA eligibility checker on GOV.UK before travelling.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Follow these seven steps to obtain your UK ETA before travelling

1

Check Your Eligibility

Before starting your application, verify that you need an ETA rather than a full UK visitor visa. Eligibility depends on your nationality, passport type, and travel history. Use the official eligibility checker on GOV.UK — search for "UK ETA eligibility" to access it. Some nationalities do not qualify for an ETA and must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa instead.

2

Gather Required Documents

Before starting, collect everything you need: a valid passport with at least six months' validity beyond your planned travel date; an active email address to receive your ETA decision; a payment card (credit or debit) to pay the £16 fee; and your planned travel dates and destination details.

3

Access the UK ETA App or GOV.UK

Download the official UK ETA app from the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android), or apply directly via the GOV.UK website. Always use official government channels — third-party websites may charge excessive fees for the same application. The official app guides you step-by-step through the entire process.

4

Complete the Application Form

Fill in your personal details exactly as they appear in your passport: full name, date of birth, nationality, and passport number. You will also answer questions about your travel history, any previous UK visits, criminal convictions, and health-related matters. Answer all questions honestly — providing false information is a serious criminal offence and will result in refusal or denial of entry.

5

Pay the Fee

The current ETA application fee is £16 per person — this includes infants and children. Payment is accepted by credit card, debit card, or digital payment method. The fee is non-refundable once an application has been submitted, regardless of the outcome. Every member of your travelling group, including children, requires a separate application.

6

Receive Your ETA

Most applications are processed within three working days, though many are approved much sooner. You will receive a confirmation email to the address provided in your application. Your ETA is stored entirely electronically and linked to your passport number — there is no physical document to carry or print. Apply well in advance to avoid any last-minute delays.

7

Travel to the UK

Once approved, there is nothing to print. Your ETA is verified digitally at airline check-in and again at the UK border. Simply present the same passport used in your application. The ETA is valid for two years from the date of approval — or until your passport expires, whichever comes first — allowing unlimited visits within that period without reapplying.

Important Notes

Key points every traveller must know before applying for and using their UK ETA

Your ETA is linked electronically to your passport. There is no physical ETA document. It is stored digitally and tied to your specific passport number. Airlines and UK Border Force check it automatically during check-in and at the border. Always travel with the same passport you used to apply — no other passport will work.

Renewing your passport invalidates your ETA. Because the ETA is tied to your passport number, renewing or replacing your passport — even if your old ETA is still within its two-year validity period — means you must apply for a brand new ETA linked to your new passport before you can travel to the UK.

An ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. The ETA is a pre-travel authorisation, not a guaranteed right of entry. UK Border Force officers make the final decision at the point of entry. Always be prepared to explain the purpose of your visit, show evidence of onward travel, and demonstrate you have sufficient funds for your stay.

Every child needs their own individual ETA. All travellers — including newborns, infants, and children of all ages — must have their own ETA linked to their own passport. Children cannot travel on a parent's ETA. Parents or guardians must apply on behalf of minors using the same official app or GOV.UK website.

Frequently Asked Questions

The vast majority of UK ETA applications are processed within three working days. Many applicants receive a decision within hours of submitting. However, some applications may take longer if additional security checks are required. We strongly recommend applying at least two weeks before your planned departure date. Do not book non-refundable flights or accommodation until you have received your ETA approval.

No. An ETA does not permit you to work in the United Kingdom. It authorises entry for tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings (not performing paid work), medical treatment, short-term study, and transit. If you intend to work in the UK, you must obtain the appropriate work visa before travelling. Working in the UK without the correct authorisation is a serious immigration offence that can result in deportation and a ban from future entry.

If your ETA application is refused, you will receive a notification explaining the decision. In most cases you will have the option to apply for a Standard Visitor Visa instead, which involves a more detailed assessment of your circumstances. If you believe the refusal was issued in error, there may be a review process available. Seek professional immigration advice before reapplying. Never attempt to travel to the UK without a valid ETA or visa — you will be refused boarding at your departure airport.

An ETA permits a maximum stay of six months per individual visit. Extensions of leave for ETA holders are not available — you must depart the UK before your permitted leave expires. If your circumstances require a longer stay in the UK, you must leave and apply for an appropriate long-term visa from outside the UK before re-entering. Overstaying your permitted leave is a serious immigration offence.

Yes. Every traveller entering the UK — regardless of age, including newborns and infants — requires their own individual ETA linked to their own passport. Children cannot share an ETA with a parent or guardian. Parents or legal guardians must complete the application on behalf of minors, paying the £16 fee per child. Ensure the child's passport details are entered accurately and match their travel document exactly.

No. The £16 ETA fee is non-refundable once an application has been submitted, regardless of the outcome — whether the ETA is approved, refused, or if you subsequently decide not to travel. For this reason, always verify your eligibility carefully and ensure all information provided is accurate and honest before paying and submitting your application.
